Trauma-Informed Care
Acupuncture’s role in supporting a regulated nervous system can not be underestimated. Whether dealing with immediate trauma (such as.a car accident) or long-term trauma (such as childhood abuse) the effect of trauma often results in a dys-regulated nervous system which can manifest as stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches, fatigue, and a range of types of body pain.
Trauma-informed care in my practice means that I aim to be aware and sensitive to the role that physical, sexual, and institutional abuse and/or neglect play in clients’ experiences both in and out of the treatment room. Being trauma-informed also means leaving space for people to talk about their trauma, or not - depending on what the client wants. I aim to be sensitive to people’s individual triggers and be aware of the role that recurring feelings of shame, guilt, rage, isolation, and disconnection can play in the healing process.
